Ishamil Shabazz grew up playing traditional American sports before heading off to college. During his time at the University of Oregon, he missed being part of a team which led him to discover rugby. He made his debut at the Pac-12 7s tournament in Arizona.
After graduating from Oregon, Shabazz moved to New Zealand where he spent two seasons playing premier-level rugby in Te Awamutu, Waikato, participating in both 7s and 15s. He moved to New Jersey to join Rugby New York and played with the New York Athletic Club in the offseason.
In 2022, Shabazz played with PR7s’ Southern Headliners for all three tournaments. He is a player for Old Glory DC and resides in Jersey City, NJ, during the offseason.
