Cambridge, Mass. – Harvard rugby alum Sofie Fella was drafted for and signed with the Pittsburgh Steeltoes Premiere Rugby Sevens (PR7s) team. She is the first Crimson alum to sign with a PR7s team.
Premier Rugby Sevens (PR7s) is a groundbreaking pro sports league focused on rugby sevens teams in North America that debuted in 2021. It is the first sports organization of its kind, with both women’s teams and men’s teams under one umbrella receiving equal pay. PR7s is the first major standalone rugby sevens circuit in the world.
The Pittsburgh Steeltoes is a new expansion franchise beginning play in 2023 that represents the rich rugby traditions and history of Pittsburgh, Western Pennsylvania, and the greater Ohio River Valley. Donning the traditional black and gold, the Steeltoes pay homage to the industrial heritage of the city and reflect the workmanlike attitude on the field.
A center from Shanghai, China, Fella will join the Steeltoes team after graduating from Harvard in 2022 after a successful career on the field. In her first-year debut at Harvard, Fella scored the opening try in the first match of the season against Quinnipiac. She went on to tally eight trys in her first year with Harvard. In Spring of 2022, she was the first player in program history to score 20 trys in one singular season. With an overall record of 36, she tops the Crimson record book in the category of most trys scored overall.
A member of the 2019 National Championship team, Fella led the team to victory a year after helping lead the team to the program’s first NIRA Championship appearance in 2018. She was also a member of the 2019 Bronze medal 7s team at USA Rugby 7s Nationals.
