Nicholas, Canada win all-star tourney
Blenheim’s Breanne Nicholas helped the Canadian women’s team go 2-0 at the Premier Rugby Sevens (PR7s) all-star tournament Sunday in Portland, Ore.
Canada beat the PR7s All-Stars 27-0 and the United States 26-5. Nicholas scored a try against the U.S.
Canada’s women’s team will begin the HSBC SVNS series Nov. 30 and Dec. 1 in Dubai and Dec. 7-8 in Cape Town.
Jordan helps Hawks reach Vanier Cup
Chatham’s Ethan Jordan made a game-high nine catches for 76 yards in the Laurier Golden Hawks’ 48-24 win over the Bishop’s Gaiters in the Uteck Bowl national semifinal Saturday in Lennoxville, Que.
The Golden Hawks led 34-3 at halftime.
Chatham’s Darion Bacik-Hadden didn’t play for the Golden Hawks after being injured the previous week in their OUA championship win.
The Hawks will play for the Vanier Cup national football championship Saturday against the Laval Rouge et Or at 1 p.m. in Kingston.
Laurier is in the Vanier Cup for the first time since winning in 2005. Laval has won three of the last seven national titles.
Blades’ Lemieux shuts out Wild
Owen Lemieux had a 15-save shutout and Everitt Swayze scored in the third period Sunday as the Blenheim Blades beat the Walpole Island Wild 1-0 in the Provincial Junior Hockey League’s Stobbs Division.
Wild goalie Jackson Sterling made 40 saves in front of 275 at Blenheim Memorial Arena.
On Saturday, Jack Lewis scored twice and Jake Vancoillie made 33 saves in the Blades’ 6-2 win over the Wheatley Omstead Sharks before 677 at Blenheim Memorial Arena.
Nick Cameron, Dominic Goure, Andrew Goulet and Ethan Chittle also scored. Lewis’s first goal came 23 seconds into the game.
Jaydon Ferguson and Kyle Bleau scored for the Sharks. Ethan Handley made 22 saves.
The sixth-place Blades (8-7-2-0) visit the Lakeshore Canadiens Friday and host the Essex 73’s Sunday at 7 p.m.
The fourth-place Sharks (10-9-0-0) host the Dresden Kings Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. and visit Dresden Friday at 7:30 p.m.
The last-place Wild (2-16-2-0) host the Amherstburg Admirals Thursday at 7:30 p.m. and play Saturday in Mooretown.
Kings earn point with overtime loss
Geremia Nappi and Brandon Homick scored Sunday in the Dresden Kings’ 3-2 overtime loss to the Lakeshore Canadiens in the PJHL’s Stobbs Division.
Kings goalie Blake Verberne made 25 saves in front of 143 at the Ken Houston Memorial Agricultural Centre.
Trevor Larue scored 58 seconds into overtime for the Canadiens (16-2-0-0).
On Friday, Nappi and Xandre Aitken scored for the seventh-place Kings (5-13-1-0) in a 6-2 loss to the Mooretown Flags (10-7-2-1) before 268 fans in Dresden. Verberne and Joseph Malinowski combined for 31 saves.
Bluebirds lose shutout to Jets
Blenheim’s Evan DeBrouwer had a 49-save shutout Friday in the Strathroy Jets’ 3-0 home win over the Tilbury Bluebirds in the Ontario Super Hockey League.
Ryan Polidori made 41 saves for the Bluebirds (4-6-0), who play again Friday in Strathroy and host the Alvinston Killer Bees Saturday at 7:30 p.m.
Stonehouse stars with winning goal
Blenheim’s Brady Stonehouse was the third star with the winning goal late in the third period Sunday as the Ottawa 67’s beat the Owen Sound Attack 4-3 in the OHL.
He has two goals in four games this season.
