Two August Events Will Bring Top Youth Talent to the Pacific Northwest, Including a PR7s Academy Showdown
PORTLAND, OR (July 30, 2025) – Premier Rugby Sevens (PR7s), the first men’s and women’s professional rugby sevens league the U.S., is proud to announce the launch of the PR7s Rise Portland Youth Tournaments, hosted by the Portland Loggerheads Academy, one of PR7s’ official youth Academy teams. Taking place on August 16 and August 30 at the ORSU Rugby Center in West Linn, Oregon, these tournaments mark a major step in PR7s’ commitment to growing the game at the grassroots level across America.
Led by Olympian Martin Iosefo and an elite staff of top-tier local coaches, the Portland Loggerheads Academy is building a new generation of rugby players. These August tournaments will bring together U20 boys and girls teams from across the region to compete in a fun, fast-paced sevens format, just like the pros.
The two-event series includes:
- August 16: Portland Local Tournament – A community-focused event featuring competitive teams from the Portland area and surrounding regions.
- August 30: PNW Regional Tournament – A broader regional competition featuring top teams from up and down the West Coast.
The Regional Tournament will also feature a can’t-miss PR7s Rise Academy showdown, as the Golden State Retrievers Academy travels north to challenge the Loggerheads Academy and other standout programs. This head-to-head clash between two PR7s Academy teams will give fans a preview of the next wave of American rugby stars.
“We’re excited to bring youth sevens competition to Portland,” said Martin Iosefo. “Our goal with the PR7s Rise platform is to give young athletes meaningful playing opportunities, elite coaching, and a pathway to go from the grassroots to the collegiate and professional level. These tournaments are just the beginning.”
The Portland tournaments are part of PR7s Rise, the league’s nationwide initiative to develop youth and amateur rugby through academy teams, camps, clinics, and now, youth pop-up tournaments. By creating opportunities for high school players to compete and develop, PR7s is building a sustainable pipeline for American rugby.
Both tournaments guarantee four games per team plus single elimination playoffs, with multiple teams already registered. Limited spots remain for interested teams.
